BONFIRE NIGHT ON THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER

What do we celebrate in Great Britain, New Zealand and South Africa on the 5th of November?

Remember, remember, the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot
I see no reason
The gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Watch this video of a typical 5th November in Great Britain. People celebrate

"Guy Fawkes Night", or "Bonfire Night".  They light bonfires and fireworks and burn the effigy of Guy Fawkes. Watch this :

Guy Fawkes
Guy Fawkes, with 12 other conspirators tried to assassinate the King and the government on the 5th November 1605.

The 13 catholic conspirators

They were Catholics and Catholics were persecuted in England. In fact, the King made Catholicism illegal.

They decided to blow up the Houses of Parliament with 36 barrels of Gunpowder on the State Opening of Parliament.

The plot did not work. The King's guards stopped them just in time.

Guy Fawkes is arrested and interrogated and eventually, tortured. At first he says his name is John Johnson, but after 2 days of torture...

He gives the names of his accomplices and the King decides their execution. King James is furious.
